Subclass 500 – Student Visa
  • The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows international students to live in Australia while enrolled in an approved course of study. It’s the most popular visa for those pursuing university degrees, TAFE, language courses, or vocational education.
  • Key Features:
  • Valid for the duration of your course + additional months
  • Work rights: Up to 48 hours per fortnight during term and unlimited hours during breaks
  • Access to multiple entry during visa validity
  • Eligible for post-study work visas (Subclass 485)
  • Eligible Courses:
  • Higher education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD)
  • Vocational Education and Training (VET)
  • English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
  • Primary or secondary school
  • Foundation or bridging programs

Subclass 407 – Training Visa

The Training Visa (Subclass 407) allows applicants to take part in occupational training or professional development activities. It is a temporary visa for those looking to upskill through structured, supervised workplace training.

  • Occupational Training for Registration
  • Occupational Training to Improve Skills
  • Professional Development for Overseas Employers

Key Features:

No pathway to PR, but excellent for career advancement or skill-building

Stay up to 2 years

Must be sponsored by an approved organization

Eligibility Criteria

For Subclass 500 (Student Visa):

  • Be enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course
  • Meet Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirements
  • Provide proof of sufficient funds for tuition, travel, and living expenses
  • Hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  • Meet English language, health, and character requirements

For Subclass 407 (Training Visa):

  • Must have an approved sponsor
  • Provide a structured training plan
  • Have at least 12 months relevant experience or recent qualifications
  • Demonstrate benefit to your career or professional field

  • Statement of Purpose / GTE

  • For Training Visa:

  • Resume, qualifications, and employment evidence
  • Health and police clearance certificates
Important Notes

  • The Student Visa allows family members (spouse/children) to join as dependents
  • GTE requirements must show clear intention to study temporarily
  • 407 visa holders are not allowed to work outside of training activities
  • You must maintain visa conditions including attendance and academic progress
