What is General Skilled Migration (GSM)?

General Skilled Migration (GSM) is Australia’s points-tested migration pathway for skilled workers in occupations that Australia needs.
Most GSM applicants apply through SkillSelect by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI). If selected,
you receive an invitation to apply for a visa.

Important: Meeting the minimum points threshold does not guarantee an invitation. Strategy matters — your occupation, points,
state criteria, and invitation trends all affect outcomes.

GSM Visa Options (and Key Differences)

Most GSM applicants apply under one of these points-tested visas: 189, 190, or 491.
The right option depends on your occupation, points, location preference, and state nomination availability.

Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)

Permanent residency. No state nomination required. Live and work anywhere in Australia (points-tested, invitation required).

Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190)

Permanent residency with state/territory nomination. Nomination adds extra points and ties your plan to that state.

Bonus: State nomination provides +5 points.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491)

Provisional regional visa allowing you to stay in Australia for up to 5 years and live/work/study in a designated regional area.

Bonus: State/territory nomination (or eligible relative sponsorship) provides +15 points.

Pathway to PR after 491

Many 491 holders may become eligible for permanent residency via the Subclass 191 (Skilled Regional) pathway after meeting
the required time and eligibility criteria.

The GSM Process (Step-by-Step)

1) Choose the right occupation

Confirm your ANZSCO occupation and check it appears on the relevant skilled occupation list for your target visa.

2) Skills assessment

Obtain a positive skills assessment from the correct assessing authority for your occupation.

3) English test (if required)

Sit IELTS / PTE / TOEFL (or other accepted tests) and use strong results to boost points.

4) Calculate your points

Points are awarded for age, English, qualifications, and skilled work experience — plus bonus factors (partner, nomination, regional study, etc.).

5) Submit EOI in SkillSelect

Create and submit your EOI. You can update it any time before invitation. If invited, you generally have 60 days to lodge.

6) State nomination (190/491)

Apply to your target state/territory (requirements vary by state, occupation list, and program year).

7) Receive invitation

Invitations are issued through invitation rounds. Points and occupation ceilings can change over time.

8) Lodge visa + documents

Lodge your visa application in ImmiAccount with complete evidence: assessment, English, employment, identity, health & character.

EOI (SkillSelect) & Invitation Basics

What is SkillSelect?

SkillSelect is the Australian Government’s system where you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to be considered for skilled visa invitations.

Minimum points (threshold)

189/190/491 are points-based. You generally need at least 65 points to be eligible to receive an invitation — but higher points are often needed in practice.

Invitation timeline

If invited, you generally have 60 days from invitation date to lodge your visa application online.

Points Test – What Counts (and How to Improve)

Your GSM points score is calculated from your profile. Points are commonly awarded across the categories below.
We run a detailed points audit and show you the fastest, safest ways to increase points.

Age

Points vary by age bracket. Invitations generally require you to be under 45 at the time of invitation.

English

Competent English is the common baseline. Stronger results (Proficient/Superior) can significantly boost your points.

Skilled Work Experience

Points may be available for relevant overseas and Australian skilled employment (evidence is critical).

Qualifications

Points depend on your highest recognised qualification (and in some cases Australian study).

Partner Points

You may be eligible for bonus points depending on your partner’s skills/English or if you’re single.

Nomination / Regional Bonus

State nomination provides bonus points: 190 = +5 and 491 = +15. Regional study may also add points.

English requirement (quick guide)

  • Competent English: common minimum baseline for GSM eligibility.
  • Proficient English: higher score that can add points.
  • Superior English: highest score band and highest English points category.

We advise the best English strategy for your visa timeline and target points — especially if you’re aiming for 189 invitations or competitive state pathways.

Note: Points rules can change. We use the official points calculator and points tables to confirm your final score before EOI submission.

Skills Assessment Stage (Why It’s Critical)

A skills assessment confirms whether your qualifications and employment meet Australian standards for your nominated occupation.
You must use the correct assessing authority for your ANZSCO occupation and lodge the right evidence.

Common assessing authorities

Assessing authorities vary by occupation (e.g., ACS, VETASSESS, Engineers Australia, TRA, ANMAC, CPA/CA/IPA and others).

Evidence matters

Points for work experience/qualifications depend on correct evidence and assessment outcomes. Small document errors can cost points (or lead to refusal).

Common Mistakes We Help You Avoid

  • Choosing the wrong ANZSCO occupation (or wrong assessing authority)
  • Claiming points without evidence that meets assessment standards
  • Submitting a weak EOI with preventable errors
  • Applying for the wrong state pathway or missing state-specific requirements
  • English strategy that doesn’t match your target invitation points
